Montréal, May 17, 2010 – Fondation Émergence gave the 2010 Fight Against Homophobia Award to Québec playwright and novelist Mr. Michel Tremblay. He was given the award by Ms. Kathleen Weil, Justice Minister and Attorney General of Québec and Minister in charge of the Fight Against Homophobia, at a ceremony held on Monday, May 17th at the headquarters of National Bank.

Michel Tremblay was one of the first Québec figures to come out as gay, a disclosure which at that time required a deal of courage. The selection of Michel Tremblay as recipient of the 2010 Award is clearly related to his works in which gay and lesbian characters figure prominently.

“Michel Tremblay's contribution to the fight against homophobia is obvious”, explains Laurent McCutcheon, Fondation Émergence President. “His world-renowned works and his personal contribution have helped to educate the general population and make them more aware. Our society has experienced remarkable breakthroughs over the past thirty years and Michel Tremblay has been a significant catalyst in this evolution.”

In order to highlight the openness toward LGBT issues and the work achieved for LGBT people's acceptance by society, Fondation Émergence has been acknowledging, since 2003, the significant contribution of a figure or an organization in the fight against homophobia, by having taken the initiative to create the Fight Against Homophobia Award. This award is given each year for the International Day Against Homophobia on May 17.
